Welcome to The Barbershop Book Club, a non-profit organization that promotes literacy and education in local communities. Our mission is to create a space where children can come together and read to their barber while getting a haircut, get free culturally relevant book that will cultivate a love for reading, and help build home libraries. We believe that reading should be accessible to all, regardless of age, gender, or socioeconomic status. The Literacy Crisis "We Are Failing Our Youth"
The Barbershop Book Club Inc is an innovative idea that has taken the world by storm. It is a creative model that combines the traditional barbershop experience with a book club. The concept was born out of the desire to promote literacy inside the barbershop and create a sense of community among black and brown boys of color, particularly those in underrepresented communities.
The book club is held in barbershops across the Pinellas County and provides a platform for men to engage in meaningful discussions with young boys about books that they are given for free if they read to their barber, along with a free haircut. The model has been successful in encouraging the youth that reading can be cool and fun in a safe space. Edifying young boys the impact and practice of reading has been a passion, connecting with men/barbers who may not have otherwise invested in a book club may find value once they see the numbers for themselves.
The Barbershop Book Club Inc is not only promoting literacy but is also helping to create a safe space for men and boys to talk about issues that affect them. It is an innovative solution to the problem of illiteracy and social isolation among men in underrepresented communities.
