10,000 BOOKS & COUNTING

Since 2016 the Barbershop Book Club (BSBC) Literacy Project has provided hundreds of free books and positive adult role modeling, mentoring, and reading engagements to low-income youth from ages 2 to 18.

Youth receive a free haircut and book from barbers participating in the Barbershop Book Club while they read an age-appropriate, culturally relevant book while getting a haircut.

Who We Are

Founder

Barbershop Book Club was started by Master Barber Antonio Brown at Central Station Barbershop & Grooming, located in the Grand Central District of St. Petersburg.

Brown launched the program to help make a positive change in the literacy rates of young Black and Latino male students in South St. Petersburg, FL where statistics show that less than 30% of boys are reading on level by third grade.

The Barbershop Book Club’s core values are the three Es: Encouraging, Edifying, and Excelling to foster a lifelong love of literacy.

The Barbershop Book club’s priority population is urban Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) youth ages 2-18 and their families located in central and South St Petersburg, FL.

Annually the BSBC provides over 500 haircuts, distributes over 3,000 books to children, and participates in two community engagement events per month.

'We are Here for All"

We target impact areas within South St. Petersburg neighborhoods include local barbershops, partner nonprofit, community organizations and community events.
